Good afternoon ATOT !

One of the perks of my current employer is they pay for professional memberships such as IEEE. In your experience what are the best ones to belong to ? I got a degree in software engineering, but I wear many IT hats. Everything from financial application database developer to managing a smaller IT department to most currently a webmaster.

What professional organizations offer the most useful perks ? Which ones will help me stay relevant and up to date with the perpetual march of advancing technologies ?

Also what magazines do you find the most useful? I ask because certain ones I have read seem more like glorified magazine ads than trade publications. I think it is important, especially during interviews to be able to speak competently on a wide variety of IT topics.

Thoughts?

Hmm. Good question.

If you're looking for a catch all grab bag that isn't vendor specific I really don't have a suggestion... Info Week seems to keep up with all the trends, etc. The best info IMO comes from the product/platform/vendor specific mags. So like if you're an Oracle dev you'd want their mag. Same for SQL, etc.

For organizations on the MSFT side there is SQLPass, INETA, your local user groups, etc. I have no idea about the Java & Oracle heads... they probably have similar outlets, no?
