Best processor to buy?

Hi all, thinking of upgrading my p3 500 Oc to 667 to something different.

I would probably go intel as I have a BF-6 Mobo, so swapping the processor would be easy.

I don't mind buying an athlon board or porcessor.

I want to know what is the best athlon or p3 to overclock to get at least a 1 ghz of speed. Preferably I want o go over 1 ghz, but would be perfectly satisfied at 1 ghz or close to it.

I'm looking to spend as little as possible.

If going AMD Thunderbird/duron, which mobo/cpu/heatsink/gfd to get and where?

for Intel, which c2 or p3 to get, to work with my abit bf6 with latest bios and where?

Here is whats in my current system which may help you decide.

Abit BF-6
256 MB Pc133 Sdram - cas3 but not sure if it is cas 2.
300 W ATX power supply
Full tower inwin q500 case, with 3 nidec blowers, 5 inch intake fan, and 4 inch exhaust fan at top, nidec blowers over cpu to blow heat on and remove heat from cpu out of case, and one blower blowing across graphics card/ other cards.
8X Iomagic DVD Rom
12/10/32A Plextor Plexwriter
15.1 gig IBM HD 7200 rpm
30 gig maxtor 7200rpm
SB live x-gamer
Real Magic DVD Decoder card
Matrox G400 16MB OEM
netgear fa310tx network card

Like I said don't mind changing mobo to go thunderbird/duron so don't mind extra cost in that.

Looking to spend around $200 for processor thats stable at 1 ghz or more.

Mobo I figure is $100-$150 if I go Thunder/Duron.

Thanks for any info, probably not upgrading till after the new year, but would like an idea of whats around. I've been away fromt he scene since I got the p3 500 oc to 667 at default voltage with retail heatsink/fan, rock solid stable. have had system running without any crashes at all for over a week, playing games, using apps, etc etc. and have gone longer too, but that was a while ago, now I generally like to reboot once a day now just to make sure its running at top performance.

All in all I want to spend as little as possible of course. :)

Thanks for the help,

Ashman

If you go p3, i would get a guaranteed cC0 700E from either Bonkers325 or CompuWiz1.

If you go duron/t-bird, i'd recommend a MSI K7t Pro2(PC Club has them in stock, for $129 if i remember right, which is great for a socket A board at a retail store). I'd recommend either the taisol Cek733, or CEk743.. heatsinks, both are excellent units. Of course, if you get a retail 900mhz t-bird, it comes with the Cek733...

I think an 800mhz t-bird or a 700mhz duron would give you pretty solid chances of hitting 1ghz. the t-bird will be a little bit faster, but hte duron should cost a bit less. As always with overclocking, nothing is guaranteed. :(

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about possibly switching to athlon, so I would also like to know what of those are out there that are good to O/C.

But so far the 700 coppermine is the way to go I guess.

I would like to only go to 133 mhz bus as the highest speed bus to use for a p3, so anything that oc to aroung a gig with that bus speed?

Thanks,

Ashman
