Best Processor for Single Thread Application

I am developing a realtime computer vision application and need to get a fast cpu for executing a single thread. To be clear, multiple cores won't help me here except to split out minor OS processes.

What do you think is the fastest processor out there (single or dual core) for single core execution?

You can get FX-55's off Newegg for $200 shipped. Otherwise its better to get a conroe. Really depends on what chipset you have right now.

Core 2 Duo E6800, at least on the desktop. Even though its dual-core, it'll still perform better in single-threaded apps than anything else on the desktop PC market.

FX-62 is a Dual-Core running at 2.8Ghz and it still is beaten by a stock E6600 in most apps.

There is no contest, if you want the fastest single-threaded execution, it will most likely be a Core2 Duo E6600/6700 or X6800.

Yeah, although C2D is DC it is still the fastest in single threaded apps - a lot of the benchmarks on the net are single threaded anyway.

Going for a single core Athlon FX is a stupid idea considering you can get C2Ds which are cheaper, faster and is dual core, even if the OP doesn't really need it at this stage - it's good for 'futureproofing' the system.

the e6600 goes for about $320. i think thats probably our best bet. a e6400 would probably even outrun an fx57 at some things. all depends on the app. if your app likes cache for some reason, get the e6600 with its 4mb.
