Make sure you get 4x512 or 4x 1 gig sticks, or you loose the dual channel, which helps a lot. Also if you haven't got the motherboard yet, consider the Tyan Thunder K8, as it has 64bit PCI-X slots at 133 mhz, and many controllers can use that bandwidth.

Just an idea...you might want to get 2 20'' or greater LCD's. That way you can run 1600x1200. Otherwise you are going to have a super sweet video card and you won't be able to run it at high resolutions. Plus it might be real nice to have the extra real estate for editing. Just an idea.

Hey Guys if you are planning to use a Matrox RT.X card with a Dual Opteron Motherboard you may want to think again...

I hope this helps someone out there if they are in the planning stages...

Hi,

unfortunately none of the chipsets that the opteron motherboards come with will work with the RTX.

Yea I know!!! Sorry to be the messenger of bad news SpokeLee. I too was planning to build a Dual Opteron system with the Matrox RT.X card. You can try it but I wouldn't want to spend all that money to put together a system that may have compatibly issues.

Mik3y, if you look the website below the Matrox RT.X card does not support the K8T800 chipset....

www.matrox.com/video/support/rtx100xtremepro/rec/chipsets.cfm

If somebody is having great luck with a dual Opteron System and a Matrox RT.X card please drop the a line.

Good Luck SpokeLee on puttig together your video editing system...

Well maybe not yet. Ok here is the low down:

The Master2 board wouldn't post probably because I needed a bios update to run the 250's. Since I didn't have an older Opteron to plug in to update the bios I had to have MSI send me a new bios chip. After I installed the new chip, I hit power, heard a pop, and the board wouldn't turn on again. So I am rmaing the board and then selling it. I got a Tyan board instead which I will intall tomorrow, I hope it works. And I hope the chipset does work with the matrox or I will have to refund that too.

Its ok opteronnewbie, but its a little too late. Maybe it will be compatible with the amd8000 chipset on the tyan I got. If not I will refund the card and look elsewhere.
