Hopefully someone out there can help me make a choice of how to
upgrade my PC. My current spec is Celeron 500, Soyo SY-6BA+III BX
motherboard, 128mb PC100 SDRam, Creative Labs Geforce Annihilator Pro,
21GB IBM Hard Drive, SBlive, etc.
I can successfully overclock my Celeron 500 to 586mhz and it runs great,
except for when I'm running 3D Studio Max. Literally 70% of the time I
press the render button, once it starts rendering the scene my pc will
give me a illegal page operation and crash 3D Studio Max. I found out
that if I run Max without overclocking my PC it works fine.
The current scene I'm rendering is going to need a lot of muscle to
render my animation without me having to go on holiday for a month to
wait for it the render everything so I want to upgrade the processor.
I've thought of two options.
A) Buy a PIII 700E and PC133 SDRam and overclock it with a 133fsb and
get it doing 931mhz. This will cost me about £310.
B) Get an Athlon Thunderbird 900mhz and an Abit K7T socket A motherboard,
but I'd also need a new psu too, the price of this option is around £390.
Now I've always been an Intel person but am wondering if I should pay
the extra £80-90 and go down the AMD road. The only reason I'm making
this upgrade is to help rendering speeds on Max and other processor
intensive app's like Photoshop, Premier, etc. My Celeron 500 when running
at 586 is great for gaming but not so good with Max when there's loads
of stuff in the scene to render.
I know the Athlon is suppose to be great for gaming but how does it fair
with 3D applications and other graphics packages.
Thanks for any help.
