Best processor for $300-$350

I was considering the Athlon 64 3200+, but I've seen new processors around. Is socket 939 really worth all the extra money? And are there any other that are better than the 3200+ that don't cost more than $350?

A64 is better than P4 for games and most other tasks except video encoding, at any given price.

To decide which A64 is right for you, Read The Friendly Benchmarks, they're everywhere including the main AT website.

I do a lot of gaming as well as Video editing. Are semprons out for sale? Read that they won't be coming out until August. Unless all Socket 939s are sempron, in which case they're a little more than I want to spend =) Can someone explain to me the difference between socket 754 and 939?

Yeah, the Semprons won't be out for a while.

Also, they are a budget processor, so I would recommend not going with one.

As for 754 vs 939

939 offers dual channel memory which 754 doesn't have (dual channel will increase performance slightly). That is the main difference. I should know what the other differences are but I can't think of them right at the moment.

Socket 754 only has 1 memory channel, 939 has 2. This sounds like a big deal but in reality the A64 is not very dependant on memory bandwidth. That's why it can smoke P4s with a 800Mhz FSB. At currentl prices, I don't think there's any question that 939 is not worth it.

An A64 on a socket 754 board would be a very nice setup. I just got one and I am very happy with it.
