Best printer for desktop publishing?

I am looking for a high quality laser or inkjet printer for producing a small-run independent newsletter. I'd like to be able to print photos, artwork, B&W illustrations with subtle grayscale halftones and colored graphics -- as well as crisp text -- so I'm looking for something fairly versatile. And something under $2500. The duty cycle wouldn't be heavy as the newsletter would only be published twice a year. I am more interested in image quality than speed. I haven't had much experience with color laser printers but I'm told this is the way to go for desktop publishing, and I don't know whether I could use a color laser for running text 90% of the time. Maybe no single printer can produce high quality images in every graphic form. I've heard names like Tally, GCC, QMS among others are great. But maybe folks here have other recommendations?

Thanks.
