If you don't print a lot (because the ink tanks are small), the Canon i400 series (450, 455, 470D, 475D - the 470 series is tuned more for photo printing and have memory card slots). The i455 was the PC World "World Class" general purpose inkjet printer winner for 2004. The i455, i560 and i860 are all cheek by jowl on the top of the PCW scorecard - soon to be supplanted by the new Pixma series (iP1500-iP4000) I'm sure. The iP3000 (equivalent to the i560 but with new features like dual paper paths/bins and auto-duplexing) is already available for under $100. shipped. The iP4000 is equivalent to the i860 as it adds the extra photo black to the i3000's features, but is still well over $100+sh.
. If you do print a lot then the i500 series (550, 560). And if you can push the budget a bit the i860 or the new iP3000. Outpost.com (I bought my last two printers from them) has the price of the i860 at $69.95+sh but it says "Call for Availablity" - if you can get one at that price it would be the steal of the century! In all cases you will find the print quality excellent for text/graphics/photos and 3rd party inks among the cheapest - I buy from USAinkjet on eBay and the ink quality is great (i recently bought a 12 pack (6-blk, 6-color) of carts for my i450 from them for $24. shipped!). Use froogle, pricegrabber, pricewatch, and/or dealtime for finding best price. Also you can often find excellent deals on eBay on brand new Canons in sealed cartons (folks buy them to get a great deal AR like you find in the Hot Deals section here - they get the rebate and turn around a sell them).
