Best price/performance video card right now

I just ordered a new Dell 9200 from the insane Core 2 Duo deals they were offering last week. It comes with a 7300LE, which looks basically like a pile of crap. I have a 6800GT OC in my current machine, but it is AGP so I can't move it over.

I want to get something that will get me through until next summer when I can get a next gen part at a decent price. I need opinions on the best price/performance card out there right now. No more than $200, and the cheaper the better (if I could get something decent for $100 I would be stoked!)

It HAS to be the X1900 xt 256mb version. It's going for 250 after rebate which is heck a good price considering it only falls behind its 512mb sibling by a few fps.

Nvidia is good if and only if noise is a problem to ya. Xfx's 7950 gt is best for an htpc since it's passively cooled but it's slower than the x1900 xt.

7600GT for midrange or an X1900XT/7950GT for high range. obviously a 7950GX2/X1950XTX for ultra high end range.

best bets currently.

Thanks everyone for the opinions.

The 7600 GTS is pretty appealing for that price. I just want something servicable for my current games (HL2, HOMMV, Titan Quest) until next summer. If the 7600 GTS will cut the mustard for a while for $100 I might just have to do that. 🙂

Does anyone know of a benchmark comparison off hand that compares what I had (6800GT) to the 7600 GTS?

I just got an x1900GT, and it runs Oblivion at 1650x1080 with everything maxed out (but no AA) perfectly smoothly. I haven't overclocked it or anything, either. I'd recommend it! 🙂

dosen't it require 512 mb for utlra quyality since it uses uncompressed textures

the term smooth is really subjective =P

i couldn't stand playing Oblivion at that resolution w/ HDR back when i had 7900 gtx sli....sometimes, the game just go from smooth to choppy

$239 x1900xt at chiefvalue no rebate no brainer...beats cards that cost $300

X1900GT or 7900GS for sub $200

Actually I just read a review where they ran in Ultra quality on a 7800GTX 256MB and it was perfectly playable provided you have lots of RAM. It doesn't actually exceed 256MB in most cases (unlike Doom 3).

Notice he said ultra Q at 1024X768. I bet if he did that at 1600X1200 it would chug hard.

which one is better?
The x1950 pro is coming out in oct that will thouroughly beat the 7900gt supposably for $200.

yes, it will 450 mhz ref design of 7900GT, but will not any 580 or 600 mhz 7900GT, but may comes close to it.
Somehow any comp that are made for 1900GT against 450 mhz 7900GT only.
Who will buy 450 mhz version if fo extra $10-$20 you can get 500+ version?

let wait and see for real results.

Are you planning to sell your 6800gt to defray the expense of your new card or keeping it?

and here's some comparisons that might help:

I run Oblivion most of the time at 1680 x 1050 with my card. It does perfectly well in dungeons and the realm of Oblivion, where a lot of the action is. It does get choppy outside in the woods and sometimes in town. Overall, very playable.

I really don't know if a $100 card (7600GTS) will hold you over until next summer. You'd be better off with a 7600GT for around $130.

Well, I ran some FRAPS on it... running around in a dungeon, it's typically pegged at 60 (VSYNC). During a fight, it ranged 21 to 64, averaging 49.

Outside, it averaged 22.5, falling to 14 (min) in a fight with magic and stuff.

At any rate, yes, it can get slightly choppy at times, but that's the way the game goes. It's a WHOLE lot better than my laptop (NO graphics hardly, 800x600 -> still really choppy).

All you'd have to do is turn the grass off outside and it goes up to 60 FPS.

I am planning on selling the 6800GT OC, but it looks like they are only getting around $50 on eBay.

Thanks for the link. 🙂

Hmmmm... based on the benchmarks, that 7900GS might be the way to go if I can find the cash.
