Best Price on 6600GT

So far I found an eVGA for about $180 shipped on pricewatch, has anyone found better deals? Looking to order one tonight.

There are a lot of company choices for an 6600GT. Can you narrow down what you are lookig for. But you are close to the best price already.

Are you looking to go SLI? If so, I recommend dishing out the cash for a 6800 now so that way in a year or two when you upgrade, you can just buy another 6800 for relatively cheap for a significant upgrade.

Since this is off topic anyhow, I am about to buy a 6600 GT and have seen refernces to an additional power connector on PCI Express cards. If this is so, do I need some type of adpater for my power supply or do I need a power supply with the connector on it. Thanks.

if i recall correctly the additonal power connector is on the AGP version of the cards because PCI express can provide more power than AGP

i dont think that is such a good idea. if you buy a 6800 now and purchase another in a year for SLI the cards have to be the same. if there is a revision of the card there is a good chance SLI will not work.

Yeah, it's the PCI-E version.

I'm not sure about SLI yet. I am getting the A8N-SLI, but don't really want to spend big bucks on two damned video cards right away, and I know 2 6600s in SLI definitly isn't worth it. Whats the deal with the Geforce 6800 256MB found here? Can it be unlocked to have similar performance to the GT or Ultra? I'm thinking if the 6800s worth it I'll just get that and get another one a year or so down the road... what do you all think?

Correct AFAIK. I've looked into this too. PCI-E 6600GT's generally don't need the additional power plug. However this means you need a good PSU to power the PCI-E bus. Many of today's 20-pin ATX PSU's have 20 > 24 pin adapters or you can purchase one, just be careful how much load you'll be putting on the 12v line. The adapter will create a lot more draw on single rail 12v PSU's. There was a lengthy extensive and highly informative post on this somewhere on AT. Might wanna search for it 🙂

Alien42, I agree completely! I bought an XFX 6600GT just over 1 1/2 months ago. Optimized with coolbits it would run 545/1160 and got 3dmark05 score of 3050. I got my second card (identical model) two days ago, set my original card back to stock settings added the second card and enabled SLI. It worked perfectly(brought tears to my eyes) for about 20min. Then boom the original card failed, fan won't even spin up. I went back to single mode with the new card and optimized it with cool bits. This (newer) card runs 575/1190 and gets 3dmark05 score of 3640!

Evidently in 1 1/2 months this card had evolved enough that the older card couldn't handle running in tandem with the new one even at stock speeds. I think this whole idea of getting a second card months down the road is probabally not going to work.

And to those that say two 6600gt's is a waste. I disagree, two 6600gt's will out perform a 6800ultra for less $$$, and unless you are planning on using a 30" monitor with 1900 x 1600 res. anything more is a waste. 2 6800gt's or Ultras will score higher benchmarks, but the noticable real world performance increase will be next to nothing at normal resolutions.

I keep wondering about this - I wonder if this "I'll double up later" feeling could be hampered by different revisions of the chip. nVidia's SLI tech is still too new to know, since most cards are probably using Rev. A1 of the chips.

I believe there was an article in this month's MaximumPC where basically they said if you waited too long to go SLI it wouldn't be worth it, due to the newer models due out the end of 2005...ie one new card might wollup your "old" SLI rig.

I'd call them for confirmation though as I dont know if its PCI or AGP...

it says in the product description...
PCI Express support
but down below that it says required..
An AGP 2.0 (or higher) compliant motherboard. Some motherboards violate the AGP specification and therefore this card may not physically fit in some systems.
