best portable music player for running?

My first-gen MP3 CD Player just broke so i'm looking for a replacement.

I've heard the ipods/hd-based players hold up remarkably well when running, even though common knowledge is that flash-based players are the way to go if you're subjecting the unit to constantly jarring or movement. I use my PDA to listen to music sometimes but the lack of a "hold" function on the screen and buttons makes it impractical for anything other than in the car or sitting still.

I'm considering something middle of the road-- probably smaller than a CD player or full sized ipod...but large enough where i dont run out of music on a daily basis. I'd like to use it both in the car and while running. Maybe an ipod mini or Creative Zen Micro? The Rio Carbon looks pretty good too, since I can throw in a spare 512mb SD card and it has a built in radio.

Someone help me make up my mind.

I always wondered, what exactly does the hold function do?

It locks all the buttons so you can't accidentally push them/change songs/volume. Handy if you carry it in a pocket where it's prone to having buttons randomly pushed.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot about the OP. 😉 An iPod mini sounds like it will do you nicely.
