I've got a Rio Volt SP250 and I love it. Still have to carry a few CDs, but not nearly as many as if I were using a standard Walkman type thing. And it's got an FM tuner to boot. Can't help you on the solid-state or HD type things though; I've never had the chance to use them.

Alternative to the iPod... it's possible to get an Archos Jukebox near your budget. One of my friends bought the first Archos way back when it was only 6Gig and the iPod didn't even exist. It's the same physical size and it's virtually the same size as the Apple.

Unfortunately there aren't really many CF MP3 players... let alone good ones. I've heard good things about the MUVO as well from people that own them... flash players are the current trend for supersmall MP3 players.

ipod is the best thing ever.
I have one and it's become one of my mandatory personal gadgets along with my Treo. I have it on me whenever possible.
