Best portable laptop at $1000 budget?

I've been out of hte laptop game for a while. Help me pick a portable laptop for my sister, mainly uses it for general surfing and word processing.

1. What is your budget?

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
12 to 14 inch, nothing big

3. What screen resolution do you want?
Preferably 1600x900 or 1900x1080 u

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
needs to be portable and lightweight

5. How much battery life do you need?
3+

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
no, integrated gfx would probably be fine,

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
surfing, word processing with multiple docs open


8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
256GB SSD

I don't know much about online sites. I usually go to retail stores like BestBuy, Fry's, Costco, Microcenter, etc.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
4+ years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

I have a Lenovo thinkpad X220, is there anything better right now?

Durable, well built and lightweight laptop with good resolution and good screen. intel hd graphics is fine. Right now leaning towards the lenovo X series but want to know people's opinion if anything is better out there...

I'd suggest the X or T series. T would be for larger monitor (14-15.4"). I've been very happy with my slightly upgraded T420i (and it's now in its 3rd year of operation and still going strong).
