Best places to look for open source/open science software jobs?

TridenT

I was thinking universities, but I don't really know. I would like to have a full-time job that pays decently and allows me to contribute to something I think will better the world rather than pad the wallet of some executive.

I don't see a lot of those in the general marketplace, but I am in a /student/ job now where I do something similar to what I want to do.

Advice on what places to look for or where to look for such jobs?

Preferably it would be open source software, open science research environment, and nonprofit.

get a job for a government contract. that's not padding any execs pocket, and is (supposedly) bettering the world.

Look into bioinformatics - RNAseq, nextgen, proteomics would be some places to start looking. There's a huge need for more user friendly analysis tools imo.

Yeah, health stuff in general seems to be a reasonable place to look.

My current job is very close to what I am looking for. It's just unfortunate that it's in such a shithole of a city.

I'd rather apply for a job and get employed rather than hoping I contribute hundreds of hours to the right open source project and get asked if I want a job in their next round of funding... I'll pass on that. I don't have the time.

Then try to work for a hardware company that works with open source. IBM, Dell, Android OEMs, etc.

Not true. Thanks for not really putting any effort into your post tho.

It's just business.

I'm surrounded by folks and other consultants who get called up based on their work product. Good luck and develop a name for yourself.

I'm guessing you didn't read the second sentence of the OP.

I'm surrounded by idiots...

Many things that better the world also pad the wallet of execs. I don't see why they are mutually exclusive.

Android is an open source OS that is currently giving millions of people in poor countries access to a powerful smartphone OS for free (OS anyway). Google Execs are doing amazingly well.

So before calling everyone an idiot, realize that your knowledge is extremely limited as well.

Well, the general idea of what I'd like to do is something good that benefits the world too. I'm skeptical of any of that with those folks.

Companies with money drive open source more than anyone. They have the jobs, especially here in America.

Maybe some educational nob-profit would be a way, but you would probably have to live in a third world nation.

Best bet is do what most do- get a corp job to pay the bills and do open source on your free time.
