Best place to register Domain name? And what to look for?

I've finally decided to register a domain name for myself, but am pretty clueless as for what to look for when choosing a place to do so. I'd like to think that the cheapest price would be the best bet, however, rarely is anything so simple anymore, especially with net standards and compatilibity changing all the time.

Are all registration places the same? Or are there differences in how and where rthe registered names will be available. I don't want to register a name, only to find that it is visible to someone in Latvia only. Are registrations indeed permanent across the entire net?

As you can tell, I have no idea about the regulations and technology behind domain names so I'm probably talking complete garbage.

Enlighten me please, and I'll be a happy camper!

The domainname registration process goes like this:

- register the name
- point it to the nameservers of your host
- wait 48-72 hours till all DNS servers around the globe are updated
- done

This domainname is yours and is valid everywhere as long as you keep paying the annual fees for it (depends on the used registrant).

I recommend Joker.com. This is a cheap and reliable place to register your domainname.

I just ordered a domain through RegisterClub for $10. And yes, YOU own the domain, not the company you order it through. They don't have the most user friendly interface to change the domain settings (name server, domain info, etc) but for $10 you can't expect much :)

For $5 more, you can use Terra-Byte and they have a very friendly user interface.
