I've taken up guitar recently and have been wondering where some of you might suggest turning to to learn how to play, any specific videos on youtube or anything like that?

I asked this question here, because If I ask musicians they'll all say get a teacher, not that I don't want to do that it's just better if I start out learning by myself.

I tried and failed. I downloaded bunch of tabs in complement to some beginner's book I bought from half.com. I don't think you can get tabs anymore. I'd say take a lesson from a pro or a friend.

Practice. Practice. Practice. It's all about repetition; hand-eye coordination and developing muscle memory. The book, web and video studying can only take you so far.

Also, their forum has a lot of helpful stickies to get started.

That site + practice + a bit of asking which songs to start with will be all you need to get you going for a while. The problem with most starting out is they go for too hard of songs and get frustrated early and quit. If you start with easier stuff, even if it's not a full song... just parts, you'll be more entertained and you'll learn more.

Even if you don't listen to them, bands like Green Day and Nirvana have quite a few good easy riffs to start on. Then there's the classics like Smoke on the Water, Iron Man, etc...

I'm starting out playing the guitar as well. Right now I'm just trying to learn chords using good technique. I play the viola/violin so I already know music theory pretty well.

I HIGHLY recommend Workshop Live to learn how to play. It's a subscription site, but it's 1/2 the price of lessons, and they have an excellent structured lesson system with videos of world class teachers. They also have a song library where the teachers show you how to play songs and the techniques used.

I can't praise this site enough- it's really top notch, and it teaches you everything you're supposed to know.

You COULD learn how to play songs with tabs, but all you'll be doing is learning how to move your fingers in patterns on a fretboard- you'll have no idea what you're actually doing (not to mention 3/4 of Internet tabs are very poor).

Ultimate Guitar has a lot of tabs and helpful forums/articles.

They pulled pretty much all of these guys' videos from YouTube, but Next Level Guitar had some awesome tutorial videos on how to play popular songs. Looks like they also have regular lessons. They do still have some free videos, might wanna check them out. I thought that one of their instructors, Dave, was really good. Probably worth the money to get their pay videos IMO.

EDIT: Sweeeet, actually they have a free three day pass for their videos; I just signed up. Go here to sign up.

I would really recommend taking 1-2 lessons to get the basics down and then take it on your own.

I use this site as well.

May sound funny, but I started on stuff like 3 blind mice because I never played an instrument before... then I moved on to parts of songs that were simple (instead of the whole song) and people would recognize. (Example: Intro to Blink 182's Dammit, intro to Sweet Home Alabama, etc)

3 years later here I am and I can learn whole songs now but I never got into the solo type stuff so I just arpeggio my way through or strum... but people recognize the songs I play!

Stick with it. Your fingers hurt at first but it goes away, promise.
