I recently come across the need to buy the cable that will allow me to use a hdd in the usb port for data management and it is quite a hassle to to connect the hdd to an internal ide everytime i need it, thus i think about buyying the external cable. External encasing is not an option for me neither. I found one at geek.com

for 10 bucks but shipping kill the deal. Ebay have it a bit cheaper but i do not know if they are reliable. my local B&M have the cable for 30 bucks. Does brand matter on these thing or should I go with cheapest route?

My local Walmart has bone fide USB 2.0 cables for $10.00.

I bought one, works fine.

When you buy anywhere, make sure it is USB 2.0

I use one of those for troubleshooting (although it doesn't have SATA). I wouldn't use it for normal use however.
