Do you guys know of any tips on getting cheap boxes.I am wanting to put together a cluster however the price of the nodes is keeping me from doing so. Have any of you guys ever requested unused pc's from your campus IT (assuming your in school) and got it . If so what did your proposal look like. I just feel like there is a better way than just buying them individually online.

Be sure to check with some local comanies. I know the one I worked for a few years ago would cycle their inventory roughly after 3 years and offer to employees and local community.

Ehh?

I'm slapping a cluster together with each PC costing under $200 and im using an old PII 450Mhz with a HD as the server to netboot them all. It's something like

AXP 2400+ $67
Biostar KM266Pro Mobo (with vid, lan, etc.) $47 (its micro ATX)
- you can buy a KM400Pro Mobo for a tid bit more money and use a Barton and OC (also more $$$) ((and buy a better name brand as well))
256MB PC2700 DDR $39
Codegen Case+300w PSU $36

Total $189

I had searched for heatsinks and fans etc, i was going to buy like 30fans for $40 bucks or whatever from newegg and coolers you can get for about $7-9 bucks each for a copperbase quiet cooler. Then all you need is some cheap switches and two network cards for the server and your set (i already have this stuff so its free for me)

EDIT: i can get you the newegg links, those are just copied straight from my bookmark tabs.
