Best place to get boxes for moving my apt?

Im looking for some boxes to move my apt ( its a 2bd about 750 sq). Homedepot has ridiculous prices for there "moving kits" like 80$ for the smallest bunch. Can anyone recommend places to get boxes?

That and you can also check around the dumpsters out back of your local grocery stores, Walmarts, Costco, etc. A lot of those stores toss out nice boxes on a regular basis.

Costco has a kit I think. Also for about 80 bucks. I dont' know how it compares in size to the one you saw at home depot.

Otherwise, make friends from retail stores. Buddy of mine is a manager at a Mervyns and everyone gets boxes from him.

My family used orange and apple boxes many times in the past for stuff that's not really big. They're sturdy and stack nicely for storage, too.
You can often get them for free just by asking at the grocery store.

Its either fedex or ups that will send you free boxes - not very big, about 1 cubic foot, but great for small stuff or filling other people's bathrooms with.

Go to your local grocery store early in the morning and get the "Banana boxes"... or just ask if they have any laying around. They are really nice heavy duty boxes.

I just search craigslist for "free moving boxes" - always a bunch available in the bay area. Then advertise them once you are done to pass them on to someone else

Don't know about your area, but my local Walmart routinely has a half dozen shopping carts full of boxes that have been emptied the night before, that they'll freely give away (doesn't hurt to ask the day before, since lots of times they'll reserve them for you, to make sure no one else takes 'em). Less chance of cockroaches that way, ya know? 😉

Other than that, I'd suggest U-haul. Best reasoning for that is their boxes are uniform sizes, which makes packing a truck or trailer a LOT easier.

Grocery stores are good for this. Ask the produce department for apple boxes, and the dairy department for egg boxes. I'd skip banana boxes, though, because they have a hole in the bottom of them.

Offices are good for printer paper boxes, too.

For free go to a Sams Club/Costco/BJ's type place, you don't even need to be a member, I got more than I needed just by going to Sams Club and asking.

Ask several companies like Best Buy and Circuit City or similar. They put up new demos, have cables accessories that come in good size boxes and you won't get the damp boxes that you find at grocery stores or walmarts.

Food stores, from the warehouse area, not out back.
Computer stores, mom and pop places.
Any office that uses a lot of paper, the boxes that hold the paper are decent.

That and also check out auto parts stores. When I worked at advance/autozone we always had a pile and the anti-freeze ones are very strong.

I would pass on most boxs from a Grocery store. When I worked for one the boxs were mostly weak or carried food products that may leak and cause bugs in your new place.

Most of the canned and frozen food boxes that fold flat are useless, but the apple boxes from the produce department are great. Not only are they sturdy, but they are often padded as well.

i work at a drycleaners and we give away coathanger boxes often enough. some probably recycle them, others not, worth giving a call if theres a place nearby, we get hangers in a few different size boxes.
