Hey guys, I've been meaning to rebuild my rig for a while now. Last time I upgraded my system it was from a 4870x2 to an 5850 gpu. As you can probably guess I am also rocking a E8600. I have been following the ivybridge threads closely and it seems like a wash so far (specifically Don's OC thread.) Anyways I don't really have many pc shops in my area and want to purchase a 2500k for the new build. Anyone got suggestions on getting a solid low temp batch online? Or would it be purely a gamble? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think you can buy specific batches. But supposedly the sandy bridge cpus have matured and can hit 5ghz on low volts

No way to guarantee a specific batch but your best bet for getting a recently produced chip is to work with the higher volume retailers. Joe's CPU Shack probably isn't going to move as many processors as Newegg and higher turnover = better chances for freshest-off-the-line chips.

Thanks for the prompt response guys. I was planning on ordering from newegg initially so thanks for the clear mind. Any of you guys recommend asus pz77? I was thinking of z68 since its in it's 3rd rev and the z77 brand new and maybe needs some updates? Again would it be useless to get it since I'm going SB? Because tell me if I'm wrong but the pci-e 3.0 needs ivy to effect?

I guess I should probably post my current specs and my projected new ones.

Current Build: Asus P5Q Deluxe, 4gb gskill 1100 pie series, E8600, Sapphire 5850, X Fi sound card, 2 WD raptors 150 gb in raid 0, 1tb wd storage, Feser quad rad, ek blocks.

Projected: asus z68 pro, 2500k, gskill ripjaw 1600 16gb 4x4, two samsung 830 ssd in raid 0 for boot and games, keep my current vid card and sound card. And I think thats about the generality of it.

This.

Yeah, IB = PCIe 3.0. If you don't see yourself upgrading your GPU in the near future... Z68 should do. Unless the benefit of integrated USB 3.0 is enough to win you over (I don't consider any of the other features discussed in that one thread to be of major benefit). Of course, I personally don't see any harm in going with a Z77 board. Boards will have their issues, but unless it's as prevalent as the stupid GB boot loop issue they should be ironed out.
