i have a dell inspiron 5100 and the monitor died, but it works fine with an external monitor...tried the invertor and thats not the problem, so i am looking to buy a whole new display.

I see them on ebay for $180-200 but was wondering if anyone had a better suggestion of where to look

Thanks.

Check this first, your card might need replacing.

Register at badcaps.net, open the display, take good pics at <800 pixs, post them in the display forum, be sure to down load the pics to thier server, a thread is posted with instructions.

You will get help but it is not a fast board.

The fella posting parts on eBay is a good guy if he is the owner of http://www.repairmylcd.com/
