Anyone have any suggestions? I've heard army surplus stores are the most expensive, and gun shows a bit more reasonable. How about online? And approx. how much should they be per (box?)?

Why use MREs? Is there something about them specifically you're looking for? Because having eaten them, I can tell you Mountain House meals are far better tasting, and you can still use their version of the flameless heater and everything.

If you DO really want MREs for some reason, check out MREdepot.com

Do a google search.
I found several places that were reputable, but I never ordered a whole box of them at once.
I know Brigade Quartermasters is good, but they probably charge a bit more than most other places. Survivial stores are probably the best bet.

EDIT:
As always Amazon is a great place to start.
Plus I just checked out that Mountain House store and they seem very good for the money. Assuming the food tastes alright I would try them.

I always got mine from Ebay. There's 12 to a case, and lowest price is about $55 shipped(good luck), and highest is about $90 shipped. My average was about $70 shipped. If you see them very cheap, beware. They might not be genuine military, or they could be expired. I forgot how to read the date codes, but a quick Google should tell you.

Edit:
Here ya go. This is a good price...

Can you recommend some specific Mountain House meals?

Not particularly, but I had not heard of Mountain House and was looking for something with a long shelf life, and figured MREs were the standby. I checked out MH, and it looked pretty good. Any other suggestions, anyone?

I have some Mountain House in the cupboard, but I've never tried them. I love MREs, and so does my daughter. I've eaten them just hanging around the house because that's what I wanted. They also have the heater included which is like magic. I love the concept of hot food that you can carry with you for months. The biggest downside is the weight. If you're using them for backpacking, they get heavy very shortly. They're also very high calorie, so if don't burn it off, they'll make you fat.

I picked up a case at the last gun show for 60, IIRC. That was a pretty good price. Depending on what you use them for, they do degrade. If you're keeping them as "just in case," keep them in your basement or somewhere cool, not somewhere like, your attic. I keep one in the trunk of my car, which reminds me I need to switch it out soon. I'm sure it's been 100+ for extended periods in the trunk. From a quick google search:

Temperature (Fahrenheit): 100º 90º 85º 80º 75º 70º 60º
Storage Life in Months: 22 55 60 76 88 100 130+
