I need a new car. I look on all these used auto sites and the prices are ridiculous! At least to me. And I call the places and the cars aren't selling.

Would it be wrong to offer them 75% or so of what they are asking? I thought prices were supposed to be lower because of the economy.

Depends on what kind of car you are looking for, how much you are willing to pay, and how you wanna pay. Bad economy doesn't mean every cars are cheaper now.

Any reason you don't want to buy from a private party? Prices are usually 25% cheap than the dealerships.

dealerships provide a min 30 day warranty were they have to fix any problems you may have 30 days after delivery
this kinda help me because i lost 3 drive belts and lost power to my engine but i made it in time to the dealership
they replace everything for free

You mean best place to buy a used car?

FWIW My dad just bought a 1 year old Grand Caravan for $12,000. ~30,000 miles on it. Thats less than half of its original sticker. Bought certified from Dodge dealer, warrantied for 3 yrs/ 70,000 miles.

definately lowball on price
You can always come up if they reject your offer but even then, come up a pitance to see if they move.
Usually private sales are better cause people undervalue their cars most of the time or flex on price cause they know the flaws of the vehicle, a dealer just looks at is a commodity.
