I bought the car, decent price 6.5k (from a dealership! only place around here at the time that had a stick jetta).

It was red, but I dont really like the tornado red, stands out like a candy cane in hell, so I want to get it black, maybe some metallic blue?
What does a GOOD paint job run these days? I just dont want it to be half assed and end up peeling off and everything.

I want them to rip the current stuff off and re do it , but a different color!

Probably close to $5,000-$6,000 assuming they do all the prep work, strip down the body, etc.

There is a LOT of prep work involved. A good shop will remove the engine and spray the engine bay, and you did ask for a good job to be done. ;)

they require you to strip the car first though.

I was thinking maaco too, but arent they a little... 'cheap"?

Is it better to strip my car myself, or have someone do it? What does that run?

I had my 78 t-bird done there and they did ok. I was 16 so my Dad and I stripped it and did all the prep work.

You're better off selling the car and getting the one you want for a little more $$ rather than painting it, especially a totally different color.

how much was it to just have it repainted at maaco?

How long did it take you to strip it?

If you don't want peeling don't go to Maaco.

I am sure all of there paint jobs dont peel, otherwise nobody would go to them...

are there any other local places that do paint jobs pretty cheap (but wont peel, or orange peel effect) in minneapolis?

What price are you looking to spend? If you have the time to do the prep work yourself you can save money. Strip it, sand it, then take it to a body shop.

probably about 500$~~~

I don't think that would even cover the materials on high quality paint, primer, hardener, and clear coat. Note that I said high, not top quality. That color shifting paint can be upwards of $400/gallon.

You screwed up. You should have just waited and found one in a color that you liked better. As it is now, you have two options - pay several thousand dollars to get a quality repaint, or get a cheaper respray that will look like crap and hurt the value of the vehicle.
