Best place for a 1st date

I, way back when I dated, liked to go places that were conducive to conversation. A restaurant with enough of a crowd as to not be too intimate, but comfortable enough to not be exceedingly loud. Reason being that it would give a good chance to listen (the most important thing) and get to know her.
Movies, or party based stuff... BAH! Hard to talk when your attention is pointed at the screen and parties are usually too loud and you're too busy hamming it up with friends to pay her the attention she is looking for.

When I go back to China in March, I will take pics of the DO ME fast food chain. And also all the WoW posters hanging outside buildings in China. No one believes me either when I told them WoW was everywhere in China.
I agree to go for places that are quiet enough to promote conversation but still "lively". Save the real "intimate" places for later in the whole dating thing. There are lots of restaraunts or even public activities that fit that idea. Really, on the first date you want to show her that you are interested and a "good listener". Let her talk about herself and your golden. You can talk about you later...
Importantly, I say be creative in your choices and avoid the mainstream type places. Dont take her to a chain of any kind, stick to interesting local type spots if you can. If you go for coffee, find a cool non-starbucks coffee house. Somthing local that has character. It makes you seem that much more interesting.
Maybe even get a friend to go with ya first if these places are new and you have never been. Kind of an exepdition to check it out. If you have been before then you can be confident in your choice and have an idea of what to expect...things will go smoother and your confidence will go a long way in making a good impression. Make sure you have a plan but make it seem relatively spontaneous and not all planned out if you go multiple places (i.e. make the first place planned, then the coffee etc as spontaneous)...you'll appear decisive and confident and chicks dig that kind of thing.
