Best performing card without external power?

Red Storm

Lifer
I did a quick search and found a thread from about a year ago here at AT that said the "Green" 9800GT was the best performing card you could get that didn't need a dedicated power supply cable. Is that still the case? I don't know if anything new has been released for this specific niche, so I'm asking you guys. 🙂

i think the ati 5550 might be a better all around performer... the green 9800 is a 550 mhz piece... i get 7650 3d06's with a 2180@3ghz and the 5550 oc'd to 700/950... and the 5550 tends to be easier to find and cheaper... and i bet the fan is quieter, the chip runs cooler than a 9800...

HD 5670 and the GT 240 GDDR5-version are the fastest cards that don't require a power connector in stock form.

There are 9600GTs and 9800GTs that don't, but they are underclocked variants so their performance will most likely be similar to the 5670 and 240.

Really any of the four cards will do. They should all perform about the same.

wow... hadn't looked at the 5670... there's even a low profile version... lots of fan power on it, wonder how noisy it is...

That 5750 is nice, but unfortunately it has to be a single slot card. Looks like I'm going with the 5670. Thanks guys!

Are you going to game? If you aren't, and it's only for HTPC type work, and want best bang for the buck, with best watt for the buck, the HD5450 draws really low power, with passive cooling and low profile. It's plenty to drive 1080p if that's all you are going to do.
