The following configurations will cost me about the same to upgrade. Which would give me a better overall performance?

1. an Athlon 64 3500+ with 512MB pc2100

2. an Athlon 64 3200+ with 1024MB pc2100

for gaming I would rather have 1Gb, than 200Mhz. But on the otherhand you could maybe stick in another 512mb later. Oh and pc2100 = ICK!

I think you need pc3200 ram to be a happy camper

I would have double the ram over a slightly faster processor

I can see dropping some old sticks of PC2100 into a new system in a pinch, but why would you buy new? Hell, I'm surprised they still make it....

Last time I checked, DDR400 RAM is only a few dollars more than DDR266. Unless you have some good reasons to do so, I do not recommend going DDR200 for a new system.

PC2100 is DDR266.

Anyway, you need a GB of RAM, but you NEED it to be PC3200. Your RAM will bottleneck your entire system if you use PC2100.

This was not a scheduled upgrade, my MB CPU died on me and my funds are limited. I was using pc2100 because that is what I had in my old system and the 512MB is still good. I was trying to get the best bang for my buck.

I could still use Option 2 and purchase the pc3200, but then the pc2100 I have is wasted. What do you sugest as my best option?
