What's the best performing PCIe video card that runs without any added power connectors? Best examples for both: ATI & nVidia.
Thanks.

That would be a 9800GT Green Edition from nVidia.

From AMD a HD5670 (a bit slower than the 9800GT). However, I remember reading about Powercolor releasing a HD5750 that doesn't need extra power plugs. This would be the fastest card then.

The HD5750 is available on Amazon, but it costs $160~$170.
Considering a regular HD5750 is like $100, that's a major premium that isn't really worth it.

Sheesh, at this rate I'd rather do a 9800 GT Green for $70 AR.

Long live the G92!

Yep. G92, I think, now can be safely stamped on "Hall of Fame". All the rebranding episodes aside, I'm not being sarcastic here. It was a great chip when introduced and it's still one of the most efficient/versatile ones today. Its modularity also made G94/G96 possible and 9400m is the most dominant mobile GPU even today.

Imagine NV didn't develop G92. Where would it be today?

Why do you need a card with No power connectors?

Maybe for a hot climate (Phoenix, AZ?), where you'd want to minimize the total heat output?
Or maybe, for whatever climate: you simply want to be ecological and minimize the power used, while maximizing the video performance.

I have the 9800GT low power edition and have been very happy with it. It is a PNY card and runs relatively cool and is very quiet.

I use this card on a 300W generic power supply and got the card because it will work without upgrading the power supply. I only game at 1440x900 so the card is quite adequate for me.

They make a 5750 that needs a single 4 pin molex harddrive power connector also.

That's just a standard 5750. Most cards will come with a 6pin to 4pin adapter.

I know power cord-less cards would be great in OEM systems. Every once in a while we pick up a fairly nice Dell on the cheap with good CPU power, and couple it with a 5670 or 9800GT green. Makes for a super cheap and very capable gaming machine at moderate resolutions.
