Best PCIE ATI video card for the money?

Scarpozzi

Lifer
I have a system that I need to update...it is a brand new Dell Optiplex with onboard video. The problem is that it requires a low profile or half-height card to fit in the case. Where can I find a slot adapter to work with one of these?

Also, I want to take my ATI 300SE and use it in this system. What's the best deal on an upgrade for my home system. Would I be better off going with a 256Meg 300SE or should I upgrade to a 600SE...what's the difference, will I be able to tell any diff at all? Thanks-

I'd like to get some ideas of what's out there.... I'm thinking anywhere from $50 being the low-end to $150 on the high end. I wouldn't put much more into a card than $50 though unless it was leaps and bounds over the quality.

If you want to play games like BF2 then you're going to have to spend around $150 for reasonable performance.

both of those cards suck....but if you had to pick the 600se

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814164052 also that would perform on the same level as a x300..

I'm still trying to figure out the best selection, but definitely got some good leads. I'm going to have to take my computer at work apart and see if there's a way for me to make it work for me with my existing card.

My real question, everyone seems to think the ATI 300SE isn't any good. It's actually a decent card. I get good video performance and it keeps up with BF2. I haven't had any issues with it. I have 1.5GB of RAM in the game and haven't had any issues. Of course, I know I can always put a whole bunch of money into a card, but I've done that before and ended up wasting money that I didn't need to waste. 😛 If it does the job without too much distortion, I'm happy. I guess the other end is that I don't have an LCD...my CRT is solid state and an awesome monitor at that.

I concur, although it'll be atleast a year before you find a low profile card that can match the x800xls performance.

It would be better to get an optiplex tower case and swap motherboards with it. The GX280 should fit in any tower case from a GX150 on up. If you have a small form factor GX520 or 620, you can forget that idea, you'll need to find a GX520 or GX620 mid tower to swap it into since dell switched to BTX designs for those models.
