Best PCI video card

Hi, I've got some bad news today (for me at least), my PC fell off the desk and would not boot after that, after trying lot of things, It finally got to work again, but the AGP slot seems to be dead, so If I don't want to throw away this board I should be getting a new PCI card.

So, what's the best PCI 3d card around??? I found lots of GF2s, and a couple of GF4 MX420, no GF3, no ATI, no GF4TI... so... please help me!!!

I think your search has revealed the sad reality of the situation.
No GF3 or GF4ti, no ATI.
GF4mx420 is probably as good as it gets for PCI.:(

Of course it's the bandwidth of PCI-vs-AGP that causes this.

The highest performance PCI graphics card available is quite easily the V5 5500, but you'll pay a hefty premium for it... as there are few PCI V5 5500's remaining.

So long as ATi and nVidia rely so heavily upon AGP's advanced feature set their going to continute taking a pretty hefty performance hit by going PCI.

PowerColor has a small profile PCI Radeon 7500, and nVidia has a PCI GF4 MX420... that's about the best besides the PCI V5's.

Try looking on Ebay for a 5500 if you can. They're still half decent cards really. Else go for a geforce4 I suppose...

Why not get a new motherboard though, and use your current AGP card? Or is the AGP slot and the card borked? :(

Yes, I'm probably getting a new board sooner or later, the vga is ok. The only dead thing is the AGP. But the thing is that i refuse to accept the idea of having to throw the board away just because of that. Anyway, I was thinking that a GF4 mx420 will be ok, maybe a V5.

It seems so strange to me, but the only dead thing is the AGP slot, I've been testing the board since yesterday afternoon and it's still performing well and very stable. I looked for any noticeable damage to the board, but i find nothing wrong there, it just doesn't work.

Besides, how much is performance reduced form going from AGP to PCI???

ok well i made a thread asking if there were any decent PCI graphics cards for the shuttle ss40, but i haven't got a reply on it yet!

anyway about those radeon 7500 low profiles.........how much would they cost around?
and the performance, i have a geforce 2 gts, would it be similar to this?

here is a link to the shuttle ss40 BTW just so you know how small the shuttle ss40 is etc

>>>>LINK<<<<

sorry for invading your thread fresh!

With the V5.... roughly 3-10%.
With nVidia/ATi... drastically.
To give you a rough idea a PCI GF2 MX400 is comparable to a TNT2 Ultra/GF2 MX200 in AGP.

I'm interested in the ss40g as well. I like all of the shuttle line, but am dissapointed that i need to put in another video card. Seems shortsided of shuttle to put in such weak graphics. The ss51g is comming out with AGP slots maybe we should wait for that, cause it would be better to have agp graphics, instead of settle for dissapointing pci.

The latest and greatest is PowerColor's Radeon 9000 PCI. CRT+TV+DVI outputs, and only a slight reduction in clock speeds to fit the lower power budget of PCI slots.

i have just finished reading a couple of reviews on the Shuttle SS51G and they are quite frankly superb, for what they are and the size of them they surely do have a hell of a lot to offer.....

check out anand's review ----->HERE<----- with a Geforce 3 TI 200

check out Hexus's review ----->HERE<----- with a Geforce 4 TI4200

both reviews are very good indeed.

i am not sure how long it's gonna be before they are released however (in england anyway) and whether i should wait for an athlon based system or just splash out the extra cash and go for the pentium 4 version already

what do you think?

Spend 80 bucks get a LAN/RAiD/USB Nforce Mobo, check Anand's latest prices. Trust me an AGP card will do much better. Not to mention Radeon8500Le128MB is like 90$.

The SS51 definatly looks the most impressive, but at around $380 it is pretty pricey. I think the AGP slot is a must if you are looking to have a gameing PC but otherwise The ss50 is only $275 from newegg and seems to be the best value. I would get the ss50 over the ss40g right now because when you factor in the cpu the P4 setup will actually cost you less. But ss40g vs ss51g I would go with the newest technology. I like the improvments i have seen so if you are willing to spend the extra money it looks like it is worth it. For me I am hopeing that i can get the ss50 and use the supplied video and not have to buy an additional card at all. Does anyone know what the ss50's sis 315 chip set would compare to on a video card today?

not nice, not nice at all, the board of these system are pretty average apperently, i have read some users comments on the VIA forums about it and they are not too pleased, which is why they get an extra graphics card, even if it's PCI it still extremely out-powers the on-boards video.

these systems with onboard video will get about 1500 3dmarks say with a pentium 4 2.0GHZ
yet the same system with say a basic graphics card (PCI) like a geforce 2 mx400 will probably do around 3000-3500 3dmarks.

now the shuttle ss51g like in the reviews shows that it can do pretty much the same as a normal desktop can do

i just wanna know whether i should get the ss51g (pentium 4 set-up) or wait for the ss41g (athlon set-up) i have just ordered an XP1800 and intend on getting a radeon 9700 as soon as they come out, do you think this would be an ultimate PC?

well if ya already got the xp processor your going to have to go with the ss40g or wait for the ss41g. SInce the ss40g is so pricy right now i would wait for the newer model to come out with AGP

This badboy might be tough to shoehorn into your case, but you might want to wait on the upcoming board for some real performance.
