best pci video card out there?

i recently heard about the creative soundblaster extigy, and so, for my shuttle sv24, ill be needing a pci video card. any suggestions? i think im really looking at a sub-$100 price range...

I think Elsa has some Gloria cards in PCI flavor. They would probably be among the best.

I use a Visiontek extasy geforce mx 400 and these can be had for under $100 US. Check price watch.

you could go with a radeon 32 ddr for good gaming, 2D and Dvd playback..they're expensive though, might be able to find one ~100.

I vote for a Voodoo3 3000.... these things rock(well I used to have one in my current box, and I get same fps in UT as my radeon-albeit at a higher color depth and the high res textures on)

Well the absolute best run into thousands of dollars and have 4 VGA ports so I doubt thats what you want.

Without a doubt the ATI Radeon SDR PCI is the best out there for the money. You can buy it new for $100 less $30 rebate. Solid card, and while ATI support isn't the best, 3DFX is gone and won't move forward at all.

If your referring to the best PCI graphics card available for gaming, then the answer would undoubtedly be the old Voodoo5 5500.
Both the Radeon, and GF2 cores take a huge performance hit from utilizing the PCI bus rather then the AGP bus as their heavily dependent upon AGP's advanced features. The PCI Voodoo5 on the other hand performance almost identically to it's AGP counterpart.

That said, PCI V5's are rather pricey being that they are in extremely high demand as their the only truly "high performance" PCI gaming cards available.

Besides that, the fastest PCI cards available would be a PCI Radeon SDR or a PCI GeForce2 MX400.... both of which will perform slightly faster then an AGP GF2 MX200/V3 3000/TNT2 Ultra level card.
Either one should be available for well under $100.

hm..is the geforce2 mx400 pci better than the radeon sdr?

i have the radeon sdr for my i810 mobo. my computer is w2k, and has 256megs ram. it's gives 10 fps in the final cut scene in max payne (after he shoots down the chopper). i think i was at 1024x768, 2x Anti-Aliasing. also, serious sam second encounter is giving me 12fps at 1024x768, 2x aa. (yeah, i know ss:se isnt due out till feb 5 hehehe) amazingly though, it gives about 25 fps (barely accpetable) at 1152x864. and that's because the radeon sdr doesnt do AA above 1024x768.

my recommendation:
if you are buying a new video card to play games made in 2002, then replace the mobo with one that is agp. none of the current pci video cards will cut it. you'll be wasting your $. (there is no such thing as a radeon ddr pci.)

if you're not going to play games, then no need to upgrade.

oh, what's a soundblaster extigy??? (i'm not into sound cards.)

Highly advise against the xpert 128. I have this card in my agp slot and it doesn't even work that great in games like Half Life.

I'd go for either a Geforce 2 mx or perhaps a Geforce DDR.

how is the voodoo plagued with problems?!! i have yet to have a video card problem with a voodoo... go into gaming forums and one hears the constant wailing of radeon and g\mx owners

I highly doubt the voodoo with work in those cases, they are crammed. Radeon SDR is probably your best bet if you ask me.

there is a ddr pci, i saw it on the ati site.. no retail cards, just oem, and i cant find one online.

extigy is a new usb 1.1 external sound card.. i dunno how else to put it.

i might have mentioned.. the sv24 is going on a tv (800x600), so the card (right now my main choice is radeon 32 sdr pci) must have s-video.
