I need to upgrade my modem card to a pci type. I have not come across or been able to find any recent reviews. I would like your opion/ advise. Looking to spend betwen $50.00-$100.00 . Leaning towards 3M US Robtics or Diamond. Thank you for your help, Happy Holidays.

lucent is cheap and good for only $15-$25

Best pci modem I have used if rated "price vs performance" is the USR 56K Voice Hardware PCI 2976 (OEM version) ........ $58. at a local pc shop (no shipping or tax).

I don't buy that Win-modem rational, ......... even if recommended on this web site ............... ?
Maybe it's fine for a back-up, if you have a cable or DSL connection, but not for dial-up use only!

I'm using a 1.2G cpu (which should be more than enough) ........ and I don't like skips or pauses in my music if I'm jamming to some tunes and web-surfing at the same time!

I'd go with the USRobotics brand, as they are very reliable and provide excellent connection speeds with varying line conditions. I have tried an Actiontec CW, Generic Lucent Winmodem, Generic PCTel Based Winmodem, and a Diamond SupraExpress Winmodem with different systems on the same line and the best speed they could manage was 36-40k(Yes, I tried the extra settings and applicable tweaks). While the USRobotics Winmodem will connect reliably between 45-50k with the same line. Here is a link to some User Reviews of various brands.

My 2¢,

i don't know why people love throwing money away on hardware modems these days. processors are powerful enough to handle the piddly "load" lucent winmodems put on them. unless you run or plan to run linux don't waste your money, get a generic lucent lt winmodem.

This could be out of your question but I've learned to love external cause they save IRQ's and at the same time needs no brain to install and make it work.
