The point is, a system like that will sound much better than any "computer speaker" set, hands down.
This.
My wife loves listening to music at her computer and she's running a pair of BIC Venturi DV52 bookshelf speakers with an Advent 12" powered subwoofer off a receiver. Music sounds GREAT! I've listened to some Logitech Z5500 speakers and while they sounded fine and had a lot of boom, they weren't all that great for pure music reproduction, IMO. Heck, I used to use some cheap $40/pair KLH 5¼" bookshelf speakers in my garage and they sounded pretty nice.
We also have some BIC Venturi DV62 for our living room.
Manufacturer's link (ours are the DV52si and DV62si)
I think the company got bought out and the current speakers might not be exactly the same as the ones we have, but I think ours sound phenominal. I'm not a golden-eared audiophile, but they sound better than any other brand speakers I've heard in the price range.
For a great sounding and compact setup, get a set of DV52si (not the "Adatto" version) with a Dayton T-Amp from Parts Express (formerly Sonic T-Amp, $45 + shipping).
The DV62si will have punchier bass due to a larger size. If your desk can fit them, then Amazon has them for $110 shipped, which is a killer deal!
If you want more bass, then instead of a T-Amp, go with a surround sound receiver that has a subwoofer pre-amp out and get a decent powered subwoofer to add to the bookshelfs.
Whew, didn't mean to post this much. Anyways, the takeaway from this is that even cheap "true" bookshelf speakers (hooked up to an amp or receiver) will play music better than just about any "multimedia" speaker set. This goes for "surround" speakers too. Most surround speaker setups have really small satellites that don't do music justice.
