I have around $500 dollars to spare. I wanted to get your input on what parts I should buy. I don't need a monitor. I'm not heavy on the gaming so I don't need the best video card. I've been doing some research and it seems like amd 1.8 and asus 266 VM are a good choice. Any other alternatives. Also what other parts do you suggest. I need a cd burner, hard drive, memory, sound, nic card, and etc.

Thanks alot in advance.

Kinda like you I built my son a pc when he went off to college a year and half ago. I tend to research everything to death. IMHO if you are just going to surf and email and play a few games... avoid the seduction of having the best. truth is if you watch the hotdeals forum and are patient you can save a bundle by doing rebates and hitting a store when someone spots a clearance. The hot deals forum can almost be addicting!!! but cd writers for 10 bucks ,60gig HD for 30 bucks AR, modems for 10 or less, 1600 xp 44.00 it is all hard to pass up!!! But you can wind up with a very nice computer for less than 250.00 good hunting!!!

concur, newegg has good everyday prices, but if you scour the Hot Deals forums, you can walk away with some great deals on hard drives, memory, CDRWs, cases, etc.

If you got with an nforce board you'll have almost everything. Sound, video, and nic so the asus a7n would be a good choice. Then you just need a hd, cd, and memory.
