How was this? Steam has it for 75% off for about the next day. It sounds interesting, but I am unsure about the setting of fighting aliens.

I loved it, and am not normally in to that type of game. I will say, if you're easily frustrated, you might want to read up on some basic strategy before jumping in (what to prioritize w/ building, unit strategy etc).

Some of these are probably from 2012 or earlier, but these are my favorites.

Single Player:

Bioshock Infinite + DLC
Far Cry 3
Black Mesa mod
Tomb Raider

Multi Player:
Battlefield 4

Bioshock was fun, but looking back it wasn't very memorable.

2014:
Shadows of Mordor
Divinity Original Sin
Spin Tires (I don't know why I liked this game so much 🙂)
The Banner Saga

2013:
Bioshock Infinite
FTL
Gone Home
Tomb Raider
BF4
Crysis 3

Bioshock Infinite, Divinity: Original Sin & Don't Starve. And if you allow the 2nd half of 2012 then add Dishonored & Torchlight 2.

Alien: Isolation
Bioshock Infinite

and I would have to say Shadow of Mordor, because it really is a surprise chance I took and very glad I did.

I think the only new game I actually enjoyed from 2013-2014 was the new Tomb Raider, and it was not amazing, just a solid game, which tells me I'm probably loosing my enthusiasm for games, or it was a really weak period for new releases (I guess consoles got the best with things like the last of us..)

Best MMO for me has been FFXIV. It's very good.

Looking through these responses one thing really stands out. 2014 has been a horrible year for games overall. No wonder I've actually made a real dent in my Steam backlog for the first time in years.

I wouldn't say that necessarily. There's lots of pretty good games out. Peoples choices are just varied. I played FFXIV and thought it was just more of the same ol same ol as any other MMO. On the other hand, I'm still playing LOL regularly (for over 3 years now).

TLOU is touted as great, but I can't get past the controls, so you have to really want to progress to get to that point. Some day maybe.

Just fyi, none of these are MMO. They are all good games though 😛.

The MMO genre is now classified as any primarily online only game that has massive player base. You can catch anyone referring to any of those games as MMO's. Times have changed.
