1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

  • Mainly used for java programming. Will be running desktop servers like jboss and db like mysql. Will be using win7 os and office 2007 extensively. No Gaming but will be watching HD movies.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

  • 20,000 INR (Indian rupees)
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

  • India

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

  • No i am not a fan boy of any brand

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

  1. No

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

  • yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

  • No OC. will be using with factory specs.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

  • No gaming.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

  • in a month.

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned.

20k INR = $440 USD

Does the budget include the cost of an OS?

If you can also show us a website you'd be buying your parts from, that would help us find appropriate parts for you.

The following is just a copy paste from a low-budget build I made a while ago. I'm not sure what parts are available over in India, so you'll just have to substitute similar parts where applicable.

$100 - AMD Athlon II X4 640
Good bang for the buck AMD quad core.

$60 - ASRock 880GM-LE (mATX mobo)
Basic mobo with an IGP, nothing too fancy.

$38 - Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 2x2GB DDR3 1333
Plain vanilla DDR3 ram. Runs on the standard 1.5V.

$55 - HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB
Basic 1TB HDD.

$30 - Rosewill R102-P-BK (mATX Case)
Substitute with any mid-tower case.

$39 AR&P - Antec NEO ECO 520C
Substitute with any decent ~400W PSU.

$17 - LG DVD Burner
Basic DVD burner.

 except I don't know about Hitachi... That's a really slow drive. I'd rather have a Samsung or WD.

Yeah, usually any cheap box will work fine for basic development. It could be a little painful if you use a heavy IDE though.

Hey thanks for sharing your views, currently i am also using 2 laptops (dell and toshiba) both powered by a 2GHZ intel's centrino duo processsor. Well this will be my first desktop. i thought of going for an budget cpu as i won't game at all. Anyway thanks for your suggestion. I think i would go for the Athlon II X4 quad. Will this be faster enough than the centrino's that i currently have?

My dev tools:

Eclipse IDE (with the Full j2EE support)
Jboss and Tomcat server.
MySQL db server.

I also have lot of HD movies (760-1080p) that i watch at leisure. Should i have to purchase a seperate graphics card like nvidia to watch them or the onboard gfx would suffice.

The Athlon II X4 640 (2.8GHz) will definitely be faster than 2GHz Core 2 Duo. (Centrino is just a marketing name for the overall platform of Intel CPU+chipset+wireless card)

The onboard graphics is perfectly fine for watching movies, even at 1080p.

Eclipse... blech. In my experience, Eclipse runs like a dog on lower-end hardware. A desktop would still be better than the laptops that you're currently using.
