Kids are getting old enough to use search engine, etc and I want to be able to keep them from stumbling into porn sites, violence, etc...

Any recommendatons?

OpenDNS but a good software one that will only effect computers its installed on is K9 also free. I have tried both and both are great.

Now I'm using a router that has Live Parental Controls which is OpenDNS router-based Web filtering solution used with certain Netgear routers. To me not as good as the regular opendns due to lack of all the logs but easy to setup and can filter everything going thru the router also has software that you can install on certain computer and setup different filters or bypass them

OpenDNS seems like a good start but if you want local control including access, a bit of monitoring there is also Microsoft Family Safety for XP http://download.live.com/familysafety and Norton has OnlineFamily https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs Recently became free I think.

K9 Web Protection could be better http://www1.k9webprotection.com/index.php Try them all 3, use what works the best.

Might also consider WOT http://www.mywot.com/ if not Firefox and Adblock Plus is used. Ads will be clicked and then anything can happen. Don't expect those tools to be of much help if ads leads to fresh unwanted material. WOT much better. If set up to only react on full red sites there are not that many false positives, and kids learn not all links are good. They will need to at some point unless you plan to look over shoulder 24/7.
