i have Abit ic7, P4 2.8c and ati 9800 pro.

cpu idle = 42-50C
system idle= 23-25C

i have currently have Zalman 7000B Alcu.

i have installed AS5 no spread around the cpu.

is that the right temp?

i think that is too high.

i am using MBM 5 to check the temp.

Please tell me to which HSF i should buy.

Looks right. Abit calculates the CPU temp a little differently. This article should ease your mind: http://www.bleedinedge.com/reviews/abit_asus_temps/abit_asus_temps_01.html

My IC7 with 2.8c at 3.2 idles at 42C, load 53C with a 7000 Cu, AS5. I had an Asus P4P800 prior to the IC7 and saw nearly identical results as the review. Also, I used a Swiftech MCX478v prior to the Zalman and saw the same idle temp. I reset both sinks a number of times with AS5 and the idle temps were never lower than 41C. It simply will not budge lower, even at max fan output (all fans).

Your sink is fine, I wouldn't waste the money on a new one. Wait until your next upgrade.

Make sure your BIOS is up to date. I seem to remember one of the updates having something to do with temp reporting.

Bios 24 was when the CPU temp was calibrated last, however, many users didn't see any change when updating from previous releases. My current bios is 27, 28 is the newest. The 2.8c I use ran 32C idle, 44 load on the Asus board and now runs 42C idle, 53 load on the Abit. I don't have a single worry about CPU temp, however, I do believe the Abit calculation is closer to what the actual temperature inside the CPU core is.

I had an Abit IS7. I've read quite a few forum threads (here and elsewhere) back in the day with disgruntled users complaining that the Abit boards report higher temperatures for the same CPU that "ran cooler" on other boards. IIRC Abit reps swore up and down that their method to calculate temps should be correct. Finally they caved in to pressure and "adjusted" their temps a little in a BIOS update. BTW, even with fairly new BIOS I had a Preshott running at well over 80C under load. Uh, was a bit unstable.
