I'm considering upgrading my p2-450 and was wondering what i sohuld go up to...want to spend about 100 bucks or so...and im using a Chaintech 6ATA2 slot1 mobo.

So what should i go with? Is a p3-450 that o'cs a good way to go since ill come out roughly even on the sale after i sell my current chip? Or should i got for a cu-mine with slotket? if so what slotket is the best and will work wit hmy board? how much difference is there between the performance of a cu-mine and katmai?

thanks for all your input

why don't you just spend 200 bucks for a 800mhz duron and MSI K7T Pro2A mobo...well worth it, the 800 can oc to more than 1ghz

ahhhhhhhhhhh I am gettign so fed up with all these amd pushers it is so annoying. Every time I see a post about an Intel chip, "why don't you get an amd?" blah blah. Sorry, I am just getting so fed up.

Here is my first question for you, what motherboard are you running? That will be the most deciferring thing right now. Maybe you won't be able to run the p3 coppermine.

edit: ooops, I missed that you already said your board name. hehe

Because the price to performance ratio is alot better with amd. People are just trying to help out. Just ignore the people if it bothers you that much

formulav8:

I agree with Syborg on this one, Intel makes some great chips and always has. The point is this guy asked what INTEL chip he should upgrade to, cumine or katmai, he didn't ask what cpu he should upgrade to.

If your motherboard supports it, the cumine chips are great! On-die cache really speeds up the chip. I don't know that p3-450 overclocked would yield you such high results, but would go with a p3-700 w/ 100mhz fsb as this is the overclockers cpu of choice. You can pick one of thse up for about $150 shipped, new.

I have to disagree. If the price is viable, all options should be included. Since Durons are going for a very low price, the only thing to really think about is getting a motherboard as well. Since MSI boards are going for a little more than $100 with the best stability, and a slew of Duron Combo's out therem the total amount you might spend on the upgrade is around $150 + shipping. Which isn't alot considering that your almost guarantee a 900+mhz system. Selling the Old slot 1 mobo would probably pocket back $40-50 depending on how old the board is.

If the board is too old the possibility of it supporting a Cumine is minimal, and the more reason to go the AMD/Price-performance path.

why not look at all your options before deciding. people push AMD for a reason. and intel doesn't always make great CPUs. celeron1, p4, p3 1.13 etc. and price to performance ratio matters.

Even if it costs a bit more, get the Coppermine P3. With superior caches it beats a Katmai at the same clock by around 10%-20%. If you get a Katmai you'll only get a MHz upgrade.

ah i thank you for your heated AMD/Intel debate...haha i lvoe watching them unfold, i think i'm gonna try and get a cheap cu-mine and slotket if chaintech replys to me and says it will work? can anyone confirm this?

yes i know the AMD chips are much cheaper but i just bought this computer used and dont want to buy a totally new one...heck i got a complete sys for only 350 bucks so i cant complain, i couldnt have built a duron sys for what i paid, anyway thanks for your help and if any of you know anything about chaintech and can help me out lemme know...

OK, riddle me this: Exactly what type processor do you think they had in mind, when the mention the "above 1GHz" kind?

yes i know its strange but i just saw a 1ghz p3 slot1 in the F/S forum...a rarity i know but i just want to be sure before i spend money on a new proc...i dunno i'm probably gonna hold off on an upgrade, and wait for the dual AMD chipsets

I say stick to your chip for a while, and in 6 months, THEN move to an AMD!

I have complete respect for Intel... NOT!

6 months from now I will be flying with an NV20 and p3 1.13ghz. :) Hehe, main reason for that is that I just bought a new motherboard so I will be stuck with P3s a while now. Anyways, a P3 700 will be great for you. My 700 is a good chip and overclocks very well but with a massive heatsink(Alpha PEP66). I was thinking about getting an 800 tested at higher speeds or even a 900. Compuwhiz on these forums tests chips so if you don't want to risk a bad overclocker you could private message him and ask his prices. He will probably be the person I get my next chip from. Also, there are slot 1 versions of the p3 700 but they are a tad bit more pricey if you can't use a slotket. But I am almost totally sure you can use a slotket.
