Maglite XL100 http://www.maglite.com/maglite_xl100_led.asp

hands down. let me start by saying I thought it sucked when I fist got it. Why? It's tricky to select the different modes.

But once you get used to that, oh my god is this thing great! Very bright, adjustable dimmer to any level, nice strobe and excellent night light feature. For the night lite, it dims to a very low level, just enough to make a glow... then you bump the flashlight and it goes full bright. It's PERFECT for camping.

But why am I still excited after 2+ years of use? Well, thats just it... I work construction and I still have this!! It is easily the strongest flashlight I ever had. I have dropped this hard onto concrete countless times... it does not break! Its dented around the lens, it has plenty of scratches, but it never has even flickered or shown any sign of failure.

Maglite- you out-did yourselves! I thought "f it, ill just pay $40 for a good flashlight and hope it lasts". This time, it actually worked out! Always thought maglite was gimmicky, but I'm starting to believe.

Nice review, I always take manufacturers claims of being "tough" and "rugged" with a pinch of salt. I work in construction also and based on your feedback I will be ordering one of these to have a play with.

Thanks

I've always liked their flashlights. I have the three d-cell and four d-cell models, big heavy bastards made of aluminum with watertight seals. Once you illuminate something with one of them, you can club it to death.

Also, how is the flood? I'm looking for a flashlight with wide pattern.

Nope, the best flashlight is the sky ray king 3800 lumens

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008YZ...sr=8-1&pi=SL75

:/ and you have 2 years of testing to verify your claim? overall brightness is not that important when considering all of the other conditions that need to be met. i have had a ton of SUPER bright chinese lights. Awesome at first, but the buttons wear out, or the seals leak and it gets wet inside, or corrosion makes the light flicker... or the chipset inside burns out.

the electronics inside this xl100 are fantastic. soft start (light fades on quickly), and like I said it has an accelerometer that works perfectly even after years of abuse. I am an electronics technician too, and I am absolutely impressed with the electronic engineering inside this flashlight. You cant buy this LED driver board, trust me. Maglite designed this circuit, no doubt about it.

oh wow... never seen that series. Looks pretty good.

you probably wont like how it changes modes... its a bitch to get used to.. but you DO get used to it, and you also realize they did it this way so there are NO moving parts besides the tactile pushbutton... which is part of the reason this light doesn't break.

again, overall I think they just nailed it. They made the best LED flashlight on the market, imo, if you factor in everything. And yes you can buy brighter lights, but this is a solid 100 lumen on 3xAAA batteries... and it has great battery life thanks to the excellent driver board they used. Its more then bright enough, I normally turn it to about half bright for camping...

i really liked my old 3Dcell mag, served me great for years and then the batteries corroded in it and welded themselfs in and ruined it.

i purchased some tactical flashlights off amazon on some deal. i like them so far

I've bought a few of the Chinese knock off LED flashlights, I've gotten 250-3600 rated lumen flash lights and a few inbetween. They all were really solid at first and really bright. But over time the switches always fail, or after a few too many drops the light will start flickering at times, etc. I guess you get what you pay for.

Yeah if you got the cash, you can have the flash.

Maglites are OK to beat the shit out of some skullfucker that deserves a good cracking but if you go over to candlepowerforums and brag about a maglite you will get your ass laughed at about as bad if you went to avsforum and bragged about your bose stereo!

I mount my flashlights on my mountain bike at night. Almost a year and they still work.../knockonwood

People spend $100k on a computer, $5M for a car, $800M for a house...we can go on and on here.

$300 is nothing for a decent light to be honest.

A $40 COAST blows away a $40 MAG LED though. You can buy both at Lowes.
