best over ear or behind neck headphones for $40-ish?

IF you have to go B&M, I would get the Sony MDR-V150. They are like 20 bucks, sounds pretty damn good, and have pretty good bass.

I've got a set of sensheisers(sp?) PMX-60's that sound pretty darn good. Not sure if they still make or retail them anymore though.

I carry Koss KSC-75 on every trip I take! The sound is great and they are very inexpensive. They are also really comfortable as these clip ons are very lightweight on-the-ear type phones. Very unobtrusive. If you wear eyeglasses they are a bit of a struggle to get set up but they work well once you go through getting them on.

A more traditional open foam headphone option is the Grado SR-60i, one of the best inexpensive options that you wouldn't mind using with a good home sound system.

The above two phones do not block outside noise very much at all so you can carry a conversation as you listen to music.

Be sure to take a y-cord adapter in case the airplane uses these for on board stereo sound.

If you like earbuds, see if you can find the Sony MDR-E888LP, some of the best sounding earbuds in your price range. I think they are discontinued but you may get lucky. I saw them on sale at Amazon for $30 and the original price was close to $90. Some outside noise blocking but not much.

The next step up would be Etymotics inside-the-ear canal phones and there you are definitely going to be outside your budget range. If you are sensitive to airplane noise, these are great as they seal your ear canal like ear plugs to give you the best fidelity out of all the low profile/portable phones.

If you don't mind some bulk, supra aural around the ear phones really do help in cutting engine and wind noise as well as the baby in the next seat over. The Sennheiser HS202 is a great choice but the Sony MDR-XD200 is another inexpensive option.
