Best OS for Seti crunching?

I'm going to be hooking myself up with a couple of high speed Palamino (sic?) chips hopefully before the year is out, and, natually enough they will be straight away put into action on those Seti units for TA. Just wondering what Operating system is the best for Seti in terms of speed...or doesn't that have an affect? Also, would 512megs make a big difference over 256? Seeing as memory is so cheap these days....

For the choice of OS, Windows 2000 is the best among what I have used (98/ME/linux). I also tried SETI in XP but too bad SetiSpy doesn't work on them (yet) unless I ran in Windows 2000 compatibility mode.

The SETI text client usually use less than 16MB of RAM so there shouldn't be any difference between 256 & 512 MB RAMin term of WU times. UNLESS you run more than a couple memory hungry apps.

Win 98/ME are a no because they don't handle VLARs good. If you need to use Windows, Windows 2k is the choice but I've heard that the windows client runs faster when run in WINE in Linux. (pretty sure)

That is good advise..perhaps all TA members will pour Wine into their machines to speed them up (sic)...hehehehehehehe

Win2k is much better at SETI than WinME, I just switched and my WU times have dropped about 30 Minutes.

BTW, I'm running a client on a SUN ULTRA 10/Solaris 8, and it looks like it will take 17 hours to complete 1 units! This puppy costs over $3k and it crunches this slow....

The Windows CLI in WINE will be fastest. Go figure.

SETI@home takes up 16 MB RAM, so anything over 128 MB isn't needed if the computer is just for crunching.
