so im pretty sure my main OS is going to be XP because ive heard Vista doesnt run that great on eee's =( (unless anyone else here has vista and it runs ok in theirs)

my secondary OS was originally planned to be Ubuntu but then i heard about a special ubuntu just for Eee's. Ubuntu eee was designed just for these but do you think im just better off with a full version of ubuntu?

Ive also heard OSX can run on these. Anyone have any experience?

If theres something else out there better than those please let me know but as of my my decision is between ubuntu and ubuntueee

I like Ubuntu-eee. I tried Xandros, Mandriva, and some kind of minipc Linux. Ubuntu is my favorite, but I tend to like that anyway.

Anyway, on point.

You will first want to check the manufacturer's website to make sure that you can get drivers. Installing OS X on there probably will not be the easiest thing in the world, so unless you are willing to live with hacked together stuff, including drivers, then i would recommend against it.

Actually, I just saw a pre-Christmas ad for this 'thing'!

512 MB RAM, 4 GB storage on a 'friggin digital camera card, blah, blah, blah.

Shame on Asus!

Windows XP Home for the (ahem) Win, if it will fit on a flash card... :)

~Cool

I musta had a brain phart the other night.

I'm NOT against the idea, in principle - my next 'major' purchase will be a netbook - and it'll most likely be an ASUS N10J-A1:

I would offer this as POC (note the date):

I just haven't shopped enough to realize ASUS makes lowball eee pee cees or whatever.

Dude, can you image the look on their face when someone opens their Christmas present and finds a 512 MB RAM laptop with no hard drive and Linux installed on a flash card?!?!? :D

Um...

Will XP even install in 4 GB of space???

I got my daughter one for her birthday, and she loves it. I liked hers so much, I got 1 for myself. The 8.9" screen wasn't available when I bought hers, but that's what I got. 8.9" is the perfect size imo. Any bigger, you might as well get a regular laptop.

Agreed!

I bought a 15.4" lappy last year, and it might as well be a regular desktop...

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook around here somewhere, and it has a 12" panel.

Personally, I think a 10" screen would do the job nicely

Oh yeah, I voted for Ubuntu 8.10. I tried it on my desktop and really liked it (had to abandon it though due to some windows only stuff I can't live without). If I bought a netbook, I wouldn't hesitate to put Ubuntu on it.
