I'm thinking of Win98SE for my little celery 600 project box. All this machine will be doing is SETI 24/7/365. (although i may try the RC5 virus on there for a few days) :D

if you use the older version of the gui v2.7105.432, your anti-virus won't think it's a virus:)

BT, I have WinME on one machine and W2Kpro on another, same motherboard, CPU & memory.
Both are P3-667 and the Win2K in averaging almost 45 minutes faster according to setiqueue.

It used to be better by upto 10% or so...

I don't think it is now..
I suppose it depends how optimised the particular client you use is..

ie.

I run it on an AMD K6-2-500 which is classed as an i586 not i686 so I have to run the i386 client (there is no i586).

If you run it on a PII or PIII you can use the i686 client.

:)

Well...W2K can SUCK! I got it installed and it's acting flaky as crap. I'm about ready to fdisk it.

1) It's not detecting my DSL/internet connection.
2) When I change TCP/IP properties, it ignores me and resets them.
3) When I add NETBUI (for my network) it deletes it.
4) Wehn I removed TCP/IP (to troubleshoot) and added NETBUI, it deleted NETBUI and readded TCP/IP after reboot.

Now, I know there's a lot of DIEHARD w2k fans around, but I think it SUCKS. I run w2k AS and Pro on my dually PPro systems without too many issues (well, sometimes the Pro system "loses" the internet), but on this Soyo board, w2k is a POS. I wasted freaking 4 hours last night fighting w2k when I could have put on 98SE and been crunching for 3 hours + overnight/today. Now, it's just sitting in my basement with the power off. :|

Guess what, tonight is 98SE night!

Sorry to hear that mate :( ,sounds like Win2k has a mind of its own!.

It's a Soyo SY26VBA...I have 2 of em! Got em both for only $55 cause they were "broken". Sent them back to soyo and that's what they charged me to fix em. Pretty good deal, eh?

Loading 98Se as we speak. Repartitioned drive so I have a w2k part, after I get 98 installed, Im gonna fricken BEAT W2K INTO SUBMISSION! But it's going NOT cause me to waste a good computer another moment! :| Sadly, I could only get 747 outta that lil cel 600, it won't post at 100 fsb. :( Still should get 2 full wu's/day out of it. The only other things it will be used for is network storage and some cd burning.

I'm running Sukhoi's and my SETI process on a dual Xeon with 2K advanced server (no SP!!!!! ;)). Haven't had one problem with it.

Also, the linux clients are around 30 min. - 1 hr slower than the win CLI. Which is why I try to run the CLI in WINE on my linux... In that case, WINE runs the CLI a bit faster than windoze... heh.

BTW, NT is another alternative that runs a bit better than 9x/ME, if you're having probs with 2K.

I say linux its fast its stable and its free

LOL Narzy... ;)

Really though - I have done enough benchmarks... sigh. :( The compiler used for the linux SETI client (a gcc) was not as good as the one used for the winblows client (Intel's). Although a new gcc compiler just released recently and there was talk about an Intel compiler for Linux too. I know that Compaq has an alpha linux compiler that does a decent job. But whether the SETI head honchos will let the linux porter(s) recompile, is doubtful. :(

/me shakes his head. A windows app runs faster in a Linux Windows emulator than it does in Windows itself. :Q double Heh. ;)

I still find it fascinating. ;);)

Poof,

In your benchmarks how much faster is Seti using Wine, than running it on W2Kpro?
