I have machines running each OS now, and need to install my new burner.
Which one is best? Any other burner advice for a newbie, software or hardware?

What software are you planning on using?? Some have problems with Win2K, like EasyCD.

I have Nero, CD Creator 4.02d, and Direct CD available.

BTW, I will probably be cloning a few CDs, and copying data from hard drive to CD. Perhaps make a few audio CDs in the future as well.

I've had trouble with creator but have never had any trouble with Nero on my dual-boot system "w98se and w2k".

Cool on the Nero.

Some folks say to keep the source drive on a different IDE channel from the burner. Should I put my hard drive and CD Rom drive on the same channel IDE 1, so I can put the burner alone on channel 2?

honestly, it doesn't matter...

i have two hdds, one of them is on the same ide channel (secondary) as my cd-rw and it writes entire audio cds from it fine (meaning that it's more than just copying data, it's converting it and copying it)...and it's a slow 5400rpm ata33 8.4gb maxtor.

as far as nero goes, no problems either in both win2k and win98se.

Stay away from EZCD in Win2K. I seem to get some strange error once in a while where the software decides it doesn't want to recognise my CDRW drive can write anything until I uninstall and then reinstall the whole friggin program.

Nero works all the time, no fuss, not to mention far more powerful.

Thanx for the advice people. Looks like I'll go with Nero and 2K to keep stable and powerful, and not worry over the IDE channelling.

What is the problem with EZCD anyway? I have it installed on my W2k system. Have not used it yet mind you so I am not sure what will happen. I have nero installed and have used that and no problems.

Anything I should expect.

Plextor CD-RW EIDE - 12/10/32A

I use my DVD rom to read a CD and burn on the fly to my CD-Writer. They are on different IDE ports and I have no problems.

the main problem with win2k is its lack of an ASPI layer which is needed by the burner to function properly!

yea bacillus that makes things not work in 2k for burning but you can get force aspi which puts a aspi layer on your win2k system and it works great for every cd burning program
