Best OS for a MAME/Arcade

Building an arcade for myself and the kid(s) plan is to go with Lakka based off RetroArch. Anybody here do a project like this before and have suggestions?

Aren't there Pi distros already set up for this?

I'm using PC based hardware. So I can run old and somewhat new.

I used the Lakka.tv OS for mine. I built a 6ft arcade for the kids. I ordered the joysticks from Amazon. The system was an old Acer laptop with a cracked screen. I just used the HDMI port and an old 27" LCD monitor. Kids love it.

I did a second one in the living room with a raspberry pi and just did retroarch with Kodi on it. I just hooked to wireless xbox controllers to that one. I did make a change to use an external drive for the roms so I could have more added.
