With all due respect I consider these type of Polls Useless.

There is No Objective answer to this Question!

Each Brand has Good, and Not so good Stuff.

An example: If you need a Good Entry Level 802.11b Access Point, the Linksys WAP11 is favorable.

But that means nothing as far as other Linksys other Wireless products concern.

If you need 10 computers on the DMZ the SMC WVBR7004 is the only Entry Level Router that can Do So, but that does not mean that SMC is the Best Wireless manufacturer.

I can go on this way and give you more examples, but I hope that the point is made.

I like the Netgear models but if I could get my hands on a Linksys WRT54g I would since it's so hackable.

Best - Cisco.
Best of the cheap - Linksys. (today. D-Link & Linksys play leapfrog)

It's still interesting to see what other people like and have had good experiences with. :)

But I won't be basing my purchases off of this poll. ;)

Putting aside Cisco, which is agreed to be better, but beyond the reach, and Not really needed to run a small Home/SOHO Network.

In the few answers above (which none really explains why?) You have Linksys, D-Link, Buffalo, and Netgear.

I like SMC.

So we are back to square One.;)

As some one that used almost all of them. I really do not find any advantage of One over the other as a Brand. Each Brand has Good and bad Models and it is really depends on what you are looking for.

Examples:

Setting aside the WET11 and WAP11 the rest of Linksys Wireless really Suxs.

D-Link offers a lot of Bang to the Buck but the quality of the individual units is a crap shoot.

Buffalo has a more flexible Wireless Hardware then the others but it is for a Price. So if you do not need this flexibility why pay more.

If you do not mind conservative Hardware and willing to pay more (but not as much as Cisco) get the Proxim Orinoco.

P.S. Microsoft is Out of the picture.

Apple is very limited in what they can offer.

Motorola???? :Q

Check linksys. ;)

Sorry, but logo != quality.

My luck has been the exact opposite. OTOH, the only SMC card I got had a range of 3 inches and a loss rate of >60% .

Motorola???? :Q

Yes, I hear they make great WISP products.

Over all I agree with you. Consider it an off topic thread. :p

Thanks for the recommendation for the Proxim Orinoco stuff. If I have need for more wireless stuff, I'll look at them (along with cisco).

It was really a joke. I think the quality of Linksys products has gone down since Cisco bought them, not that they were top notch before...

Netgear.

I've never had a major problem wth Linksys, I just think that physically, their routers are poorly designed. they tend to occupy way more space then they need, and end up sticking out like a sore thumb.

the only problem I've ever had with a Netgear component was with a WAP that overheated last summer. I put in a fan to increase airflow into the room where the WAP was, and haven't had a problem since then.

Oh, and to throw my 2 cents (USD) in here:
I originally bought a Linksys WMP11 (or whatever their PCI card is), and lucked out with the chipset. I liked it enough to go out and buy another one a month or two later. They had changed the chipset between the time I bought the first one and the time I bought the second one without changing the packaging. I managed to offload the second card (for a slight loss) to my brother.

I just picked up a Linksys wusb11. It was v2.8. I needed v3. Couldn't find any indication of this on their packaging.
So I bought a Linksys wusb12 (glutton for punishment huh?). It works fine. No problems, except for slightly flakey USB.
So I bought a Netgear MA311. No problems at all. It's working great, no problems so far. It's what I would recommend to anyone looking for a PCI prism2 solution.

I've had an Apple Airport card (not extreme) for years now. Never had a problem with it.

I just opened newegg (dangerous for me these days...) and checked out the proxim orinoco stuff. The price isn't much more than what I expect to pay, and in line with what I would be willing to pay for quality stuff. Thanks again for the suggestion JackMDS! :D
