I currently have a machine with the following relevant stats:
2x Xeon E5520
Z8NA-D6 ASUS ATX Motherboard
12 GB DDR3 RAM
This is my primary work computer.
I have already bought a new 'workhorse' computer which is much faster (2x E5-2670's), but I want to upgrade this computer or get a new computer which focuses primarily on the speed of individual threads. On the other hand, I would prefer to get a computer which will still give me many threads without sacrificing too much total power. If I have a preferred maximum price point of ~$1500 for the processors, what kind of options do you think are best?
I suppose I could go either for another set of quad core xeons, giving me 16 threads again, or I could purchase a new motherboard with i7 cpu, get 12 threads, and perhaps overclock. I am willing to overclock but I will need to have a computer that is capable of running at full load for tens of hours at a time reliably.
What do you guys think?
