Best option for mass storage?

Can anyone suggest the best ways to get some hefty storage space, 1TB or greater with room for expansion, good read/write speed and also what's most economical. I know LACIE Bigger drives can carry 1TB and go as cheap as 750 bucks, any better suggestions?

I'm trying to build a Media Server for my house that can have all of my DVDs backed up for viewing full quality audio and video anywhere in the house...

thanks in advance

Get one of these and some of these (at least 4 drives) and set up a RAID 5 array. This will give you 1TB+ of storage, plus room for another 1TB+ (min) for future expansion. 😉

True, but that puts me well over 1000 bucks, indeed i'd have redundancy, so something to consider... but it is quite a bit more in terms of cost.... any other options/ideas?

Well you can go the cheaper route and use 250GB drives. You can look in HotDeals, they usually have some pretty good deals on drive storage. But, you won't have as much headroom to expand in the future. IDE/SATA is as cheap as it's going to get, and I wouldn't have 1TB of storage without some fault tolerance. You may get by with a cheaper controller, but I trust Adaptec the most for RAID controllers.

4 x 300GB HDs = ~$600, cheap PCI PATA RAID controller = $50, case with many HD bays = $50, cheap server rig board with onboard GigE = $200, looks like you are looking at $900+ any way you slice it, more or less.
