I am thinking about building some low cost boxes for doing seti and I was wondering what is the best OS for running Seti@home. If that is going to be the main purpose of the machine does it really matter?

My red hat machine tends to have a slight advantage over my 2000 machines. Not by much, only about %5 or so. But may be worth it.

If you want really low cost boxes, if I remember correctly, Kilowatt had made a version of linux and SETI that fit on a floppy disk, eliminating the need for a hard drive... Come to think of it though, that may just have been for RC5... But I'm pretty sure he did a SETI one...

I think that was just for RC5.

Windows NT/2000/XP or Linux handle VLAR wu's the best and therefore take less time over the long run.

theres a seti client based on LRP (linux router project) that is single disk.

when i get back home i might try to figure out if the windows client can fit on dos with networking and ram disk support.
